ACIT Special Education Programs
While in the 8th grade, students in Atlantic County are introduced to Special Education Programs provided by the Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT). Applications are obtained and then, with their parents, students can decide whether or not to apply for any of the 6 programs. When applied for, the students will visit classes they have applied for and after visiting them, suitability of the applicant for the chosen program is determined by the instructors and the parents get notified of the status of the application.
The Atlantic County Institute of Technology provides the following 6 programs for new students:
Health Occupations
Students of this course are introduced to the abilities required in order to become a health care worker. Courses consist of medical ethics, law, and patient communication. The courses also contain basic anatomy and physiology. The second course will cover Human growth development, nutrition and basic skills such as vital sign measuring, infections and general safety of the patient. The third course will explore several career options such as nurse assistant, EKG technician and other health care careers. Also the option to pursue further studies will be explored.
Auto/Diesel Technology
This program was especially designed for special needs students. The program starts off with basic education on power tools and other equipment, where safety in use is the key component of the course. The students will then continue to learn about the several systems and how to diagnose and repair them. The second course includes a basic tune up with an introduction to electricity, basic circuit design. This course consists of a practical setting where students gain experience in the field of auto technology and a theoretical part. The last course covers welding procedures, body repair and specific services. This is the most challenging year as knowledge gained from the previous courses is applied in this last course.
Building Technology
This course is designed for students wishing to explore careers in construction. The program starts with general safety, where students will familiarize themselves with utilizing the tools in a safe environment. Basic experience is gained in measuring and sawing through the building of various projects. In the second course students will learn the basic skills of electricity and circuitry, while also learning the basics of masonry. During the final course students are introduced to plumbing and basic soldering.
Fashion Careers
This program serves two purposes. First it is treated as an orientation course for enrolling into regular career-technical programs. Secondly, the courses prepare students for pursuing a career in fashion. The first course consists of 4 modules for learning how to work with power sewing machines, the basic sewing techniques and basic dressmaking. The second course continues where the first left off, introducing the students to tailoring and clothing alteration and maintenance. The last course takes everything learned in the previous courses to an advanced level and also includes interior decorating.
Food Service
The start of the program covers the introduction to Commercial foods, where basic cooking skills will be taught and the students will be familiarized with the equipment. The second course introduces basic baking skills. In the last part students will learn all about table setting and customer management in general.
Plumbing
The course begins with basic safety skills and students will be introduced to the various plumbing tools. This part of the course also provides the introduction of basic hydraulics and pneumatics, print reading and sketching. In part two of the course students will learn soldering and learn the basics of rigging and hoisting. The last part consists out of utilizing the newly acquired skills, through hands on experience.
