ACIT
The Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT) is the school of choice for approximately 1000 students, about 900 of which are high school students. The remainder of the population is comprised of post-secondary, or adult students, most of which have returned to school to seek a career change.
Students have 30 career programs from which to choose. The shared-time students receive their academic instruction at one of the eight public high schools in the county, and their technical training at the Institute of Technology. The Academy students receive their technical and academic courses at ACIT.
The programs at the Institute of Technology prepare the students to enter the work place directly upon graduation or to continue their education at the college level. The faculty members have a wealth of knowledge in their chosen fields.
Using state-of-the-art technology infused throughout their academic and vocational programs, every classroom has cable-tv access and video equipment so that the students can view programming related to their career areas. The school also partners with Hamilton Township Government, the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District and the Hamilton Township Schools to provide programming on the local government education access channel.
While they have an excellent reputation for placing students in high-level positions in the workplace, an ever-growing number of their students seek advanced education. They have agreements in place with the Atlantic Cape Community College that enables students in certain programs to earn college credits for work accomplished while they attend the Institute of Technology. This Tech Prep program provides up to 15 credits for students who complete one of the participating programs at the Institute of Technology and then enroll in a similar area of study at the college. This is done to save time and money in completing an Associate’s Degree program at ACCC. The school also has a partnership with Camden County College which provides students in the dental assistant program with an opportunity to transfer the credits they earned at the Institute of Technology toward an Associate’s Degree at that institution.
As a county vocational technical school, their goal is to prepare students for the work place. A secondary benefit is to provide the region’s employers with skilled employees needed to make their businesses successful.
History
The Atlantic County Institute of Technology, a public institution administered by the Atlantic County Vocational Technical School Board of Education, is the most comprehensive technical education facility in Atlantic County. The school is situated on a 58 acre campus in the Hamilton Township Business Park in Mays Landing, centrally located in the heart of the county. The school was constructed in 1974 and saw a major multi-million dollar renovation program in 1994 that enabled the school to upgrade existing programs as well as add a number of new programs to meet the needs of today’s workplace.
